History of Cemeteries

Holy Cross Cemetery opened in 1843 and is registered historic site. Our Lady of Sorrows chapel was built in one day in August 1843. There are approximate 23,000 interments in the cemetery.

Holy Cross Cemetery is the final resting place for many notable persons, including a Prime Minister of Canada. A large grey tombstone shaped like a cross marks the grave of Sir John Sparrow David Thompson.

A cremation garden is available for the interment of cremated remains.

Mount Olivet Cemetery

Mount Olivet Cemetery opened in 1896 and is one of the burial sites for victims of the Titanic and the Halifax Explosion. A cremation garden is available for the interment of cremated remains. There are approximate 25,000 interments in the cemetery.

Gate of Heaven Cemetery opened in 1938 and is comprised of 31 rolling acres. Resting place of many notable persons, including Premier Angus L. MacDonald (-1954). In addition to traditional burial plots, Gate of Heaven Cemetery offers a niche collumbarium for interment of cremated remains.

Attractive style, unequaled quality and sense of security offered by a solid granite columbarium.

Selected areas are designed to accommodate cement vaults. These vaults are manufactured to strict quality standards to ensure permanence.

A Catholic Commitment

As an extension of the ministry of the Catholic church, Catholic Cemeteries is committed to the spiritual needs of our families. As part of the fulfillment of this obligation, an Annual Mass is celebrated each summer at Gate of Heaven Cemetery and Holy Cross Cemetery in memory of the deceased in our Catholic cemeteries. Announcement of the date of Mass is posted throughout the Archdiocese.

The Annual Mass for the Gate of Heaven Cemetery is scheduled for Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 7 pm. If inclement weather, mass will be held at St. John Vianney Church at 7pm, corner of Sackville Drive and Beaverbank Road, Lower Sackville.
